HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA: AN HBO SERIES
I have mixed feelings on this show for a plethora of reasons. While it was only a matter of time before a show centered around New York City and its youthful urban elite (even if some of them are broke) this show doesn’t hit the nail on the head 100% of NYC authenticity. Yes, there’s GOSSIP GIRL, but that’s more like reading a Nancy Drew novel if it came all over a Bendel’s catalogue.
The idea of bros trying to make their way in the world is nothing new. Everywhere all over the globe 21-30 year olds are trying to make it in a post-collegiate world so chaotic and upside down that well, kids will almost do anything to make a dollah — even trying to slang denim, which is harder than getting your first round of financing for a hedge fund. Rather than rant about the state of the economy, let’s talk about the show and its pros and cons.
Firs of all, I really like Bryan Greenberg (BEN), and not just because he looks like everyone I ever hung out with at Hebrew School. He’s mellow, natural, and although he’s no Michael Caine, I think he can hold this show together. His buddy Cam is OK — he’s a little too stereotypical overly-excited black guy that acts white for my taste. Louis Guzman! WIN! RASTA MONSTA! However, the chick who saves this show is Lake Bell, who plays Rachel, Ben’s ex. She is a delight to watch. I’m kinda in love with her. You should also note Martha Plimpton (of PARENTHOOD - the movie, not the crappy tv show fame) makes a stoned cameo on episode 3. The characters are semi-bland, but it’s only ep. 3.
However, I hate to admit that nobody would really be into this show if it was set anywhere other than Manhattan. A-la Season 2 of Sex and The City, New York is really the central character here. Lady Manhattan shines through this unusually bland show…although the third episode was pretty good. My favorite part are the intro credits. The snapshot sequence (stolen from SWINGERS/Los Feliz) sets the uber-cool tone, even if Ben and Cam are losers.
Let’s hope HTMIIA keeps gaining momentum. What hits the kids on a level is the love of sneakers, skating, Dj culture, spippin’ champagne cuz we thirstay, and loft parties that last until 4AM (or until the coke runs out). However, like my never-ending trips to New York City, I realize this show is perfect in small doses (read: 23 minutes). Any longer and you would be bored, and like a New Yorker, (or Jay-Z) on to the next.
For now I will keep watching, but let’s hope we move away from the eye-spy aspect of this show (Is that BEATRICE!? WERE THEY JUST AT FLIGHT CLUB?! IS THAT DALTON??!) because I fear we might be heading into Entourage territory — “hey! That’s Chateau Marmont!” I hope that 6 years from now we are still not watching Ben and Cam trying to hustle like Turtle, and they have in fact, Made It In Amerca. Perhaps they will be living in the burbs of Connecticut by then.
